What came first.

David and I headed to North Carolina for an extra long 4th weekend with some family. This is our last trip before Penelope comes, the last time we can (safely) travel out of state. The next time we are here, we will be introducing our daughter to the mountains, bringing her to Nanny and Poppy's house (my parents and their soon to be new titles).

It is nearly midnight (might as well be 4am for us, we never make it this late!) and not too long ago David was on a search. He asked me if I had seen his bible, I hadn't. He looked thoroughly on the bookshelf in the family room for a stray copy, which wasn't found. He searched a bit more before asking if he could borrow one of my parents'. They direct us to the table by the back screened porch, where he had a couple to choose from. He grabbed one, and brings it to what is our bedroom for the weekend, where I am already situated with pillows propped behind my back and my legs outstretched, waiting for him to join. He slaps the bible at the foot of the bed as he comes in, and feverishly flips through it. "I want to read you something." I admit, I was curious to see what exactly he had to show me that was tugging on him so much. "We have read this before, but I want to read it to you now." He continues, "before anything, you are my wife. I know next month we will welcome Penelope, but we will also celebrate 4 years of marriage, and that is awesome!" He goes on to say that our marriage is still number 1 to him. Still the focus, and that he will continue to love me as his wife, although I will soon be a mother also. He reads Ephesians 5:25:

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himselfas a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[c] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

I fall in love with him over and over again each day, but there are days (and many of them, I might add) that my love grows leaps and bounds for him, in the little moments, and even in split seconds. I have never doubted that he would make sure I still feel loved, and that having a healthy, loving marriage will remain our priority after Penny arrives, but I still so appreciate him verbalizing it so wonderfully, and using that section of scripture to solidify his role to me.

  1. That was beautiful of him. Congratulations again on your pregnancy and soon to be baby, and of course coming up on 4 years of marriage. Have a great week with your family.
